An Introduction to Monaco
- Location
Monaco is the second smallest in the world, only 0.7 square miles, tucked between the Mediterranean Sea and France. Monte Carlo is the principal city.

French food and wines are served in Monaco.
- Attractions
A writer in French is awarded the Rainier II prize annually. Museums, a zoo and gardens are tourist attractions, as is the royal palace, casino, opera house and beaches. Monaco has a casino and car racing events, such as the Monaco Grand Prix.
- History
Julius Caesar embarked for Greece from the port in Monaco which was built by the Phoenicians who occupied the area from the 10th to the 5th century B.C. In the 10th century the first Grimaldi ruled Monaco, the first Prince Rainier ascended the throne in 1304. The line was reestablished after the French Revolution. Monaco has been under the protection of Rome, France, Spain and Sardinia. A treaty with France in 1918 and confirmed by the Treaty of Versaille gave Monaco its independence.
- People, Religion and Language
Half of the residents of Monaco are French with many Americans, Italians, British and Belgians and "Monégasques" comprising the other half. Although the official religion of Monaco is Roman Catholic there is religious freedom in this French speaking country.
- Government
Prince Rainier III rules in the hereditary principality with a minister of state who is French appointed by the Prince heading the government. A National Council with 18 members must approve laws.
