Art la Table al Fresco
Planning and Decor |
|
|
Art la table al fresco
entertaining starts with selecting an area such as a backyard
patio or deck area, garden area with brick, stone or mulched
pathways, a pool or pond area. Always keep one thing in
mind, and that is to keep things simple, it makes the whole more
amiable.
Planning depends upon how many people that you'll be
entertaining, whether it's one or several, select the area
accordingly that will be conducive for an intimate get-together,
then plan it! If a pool area is selected use a corner area
for the backdrop.

With that being said, we'll note tips on how to make the
most with what you have
around your home and garage or attic or other storage area [or find
inexpensively]
to create a cozy delightful ambience for brunch, luncheon or dinner
guests. You
don't have to spend a fortune on decorating items for that special
occasion, nor a lot
of time, yet you'll thoroughly impress your guests. It is a most
rewarding feeling and
done with aplomb.
How do you go about creating the ultimate attractive and relaxed
setting
for your guests, with minimal cost involved?
Let's get started! Do a simple drawing
to note specifically what your area should
look like, taking in to account whether this will be a buffet or table
served setting.
Paper is cheap, so play around with your
designs for the setting area, with tables
and chairs drawn in, serving carts for food dishes and drinks [or serving
table for
buffet], plant displays, lighting [for evening entertaining]. If
done buffet style, keep
the serving table away from the seating area, to eliminate people running
into each
other.
Planning is the most essential part of entertaining, and by doing simple
sketches
will allow you to picture the area, and also to continue to add things to
your design
that you may have initially forgotten. Keep your final sketch at
hand, to make notes
when you think of ideas or changes.
What is your function to be? A luncheon [brunch] or dinner, and how
many guests,
whether 1 to 8 or 10, must be figured into your planning sketches.
You can start
with a table of two for that very special get-together, or large round [or
whatever
shape] table for up to 8 to 10 guests. For large gatherings, set
round and square
tables up in a pattern, for guests conviviality.
Putting your plan into fruition. Decide upon the
table or tables to be used, and
chairs. This is where your garage or estate sale finds will come in
handy. If you've
found an unusual and unique wooden table, you may want to paint it in your
favorite
color, then use placemats rather than tablecloths to accessorize with.
Coordinating tables, chairs, cloth or paper tablecloths and napkins,
dishes and
centerpieces and ambience. You do have to color co-ordinate, so put some
thought
into what you want to achieve over-all, and select from what you have
on-hand
already, or from your finds from shopping. These are your most
important needs, so
choose whimsical, specifically themed or more conservative. Put your
personality
into this area of setting the scene that your guests will love.
A note on coordinating dishes - you can mix or match 1 to 3 colors
[as long as
the colors go together] for plates as well as serving dishes. You
can mix and match
solids, floral and designs. But remember, this has to blend in with
your tablecloth
and napkins, you can take liberties in this area.
Use your small glass containers, bottles or vases to hold fresh cut
flowers from your
garden for centerpieces. Use coordinating colors, or create some
wonderful center-
pieces with cut flowers. You can be quite creative in this area, and
remember not
make your arrangements so tall, that you cannot see your guests on the
other side
of the arrangement. If you have a single spike of something would be
okay as in
Japanese type arrangements. But you want to be able to see all of
your guests! |

Decorate It With Tips:
1. Check the attic or storage area for finds of all kinds. Go to
garage sales, estate sales and flea markets to find tablecloths, napkins
or placemats, unusual items that you can use to decorate your table or
serving area, including items for the outdoors, and garden and yard
decorations.
Find cafe style tables, or folding tables, cheap unique wood tables and
unique outdoor chairs that can be used for entertaining. Look for
the unusual, that is what will make a difference in your entertaining.
If you're really lucky, you'll find some charming antique outdoor
furniture! Also find some cheap and cute small glass containers,
unusual jars and bottles that you can put small arrangements of fresh
flowers in, use for candles, or seasonings or sauces, etc.
Real finds are individual salts, anything that is really unique and
different that can be used for entertaining in almost any theme.
This is an area that you can really theme your la table al fresco with.
Use your favorite likes, garden magic, starlit evening, seasonal
holidays, color themes, nautical, floral, water themed, the list goes on
and on. So when shopping the garage sales and flea markets, keep
the thought of "I could use that for...".
2. Dishes play an important role in entertaining, and I've always kept
several sets of inexpensive dishes in various solid colors and designs
for various moods and
themes. This is one area to really think about, since this is
where you'll select colors or patterns that you should really like,
because you'll have these dishes for years, and too, they give insight
to your personality. Yet, you can find inexpensive dishes at
discount stores, like dollar type stores, Targets, Bed and Bath....these
type places are numerous, including sales at department stores.
And then, there are always garage and estate sales, etc.
Note: I personally have dishes in an off white set, a bright
yellow set, blue & white oriental pattern, an Italian floral print, and
fine china with a blue border and small floral design on rims only.
You can do everything with white dishes, use any contrasting colors with
them, and really set an elaborate table. Bright yellow can be set
with blues, reds and greens to have a startling and lovely French Provençal
flair.
The blue and white oriental dishes make a magnificent setting, but can
be both casual and formal. These are my favorites, however that is
what you must decide when choosing colors of dishes....think of how you
can use them in several different ways, and that you really will use
them.
3. During springtime to fall, grow a varying range of annual flowers,
cutting flowers like gladiolas, roses, and other perennial flowers good
for arrangements and ferns. Keep some simple and decorative pots
[different sizes] of blooming flowers and greenery [especially include
herbs] set in places within your garden borders to highlight an area.
These can then be used in your outdoor decorating space for entertaining
as needed. Use flowers that you enjoy the most in these pots and
cutting flowers, this in turn brings out your personality.
4. A most essential item for outdoor entertaining is an outdoor serving
cart in black, off white or green. You should be able to find one
in a garage sale, or discount stores that carry summer patio furniture.
This should be close at hand to the host or hostess, to set food dishes
[with warmers if needed] on after serving guests, and for drinks.
You want things at hand so you don't have to go chasing after them,
missing time spent with your guests.
5. Keep on hand, inexpensive paper tablecloths and matching napkins
[folded in packets] in your favorite colors found in grocery stores.
In discount stores, find flowering and other unique napkin designs that
will enhance your solid color tablecloths [or vice-versa]. Keep on
hand small colored bags [like small brown bags] to match tablecloths and
napkin colors that you select. After Christmas sales are a
great time to pick-up outdoor small lights to use for evening
entertaining.
6. Inexpensive aluminum or other folding tables and card tables [in
black or off white] and chairs to match always come in handy for outdoor
serving. These items can always be used for a multitude of things
as well as garage sales.
7. Go with seasonal flowers of course, and for fall you have the
advantage find of gourds, which accents all fall themes, but painted
these can become works of art, and used all year long. Gourds can
be artfully displayed, they're colorful and cheap!
You can always use clippings from your bushes and shrubs to use alone or
in flower arrangements. Be sure to soak them and rid them of bugs
and other little critters.
