An English Language Internet Directory
French-at-a-touch.com is a proprietary 'Internet Directory' for everything French. It provides geographical, historical, economic, tourist [with maps] and weather information about, and links to, the French speaking countries of Algeria, Belgium [la Wallonie], Canada [Québec], France, the Ivory Coast, Luxembourg, Monaco, Morocco, Senegal, Switzerland [la Suisse Romande], Tunisia and Zaire.
Currently, our information about France is the most complete. Our coverage includes an outline history of France and detailed historical information about major French cities, its 95 départements, its 22 regions and its overseas territories [Outre-Mer].
The Directory's Categories
For each of the French regions, we have constructed a comprehensive categorized directory of business, amusement and governmental web sites that covers our visitors’ interests from A to Z. A sampling of just SOME of the alphabetically categorized topics includes: 'Amusement Parks', 'Architectural/Historical Sites', 'Basic Travel', 'Businesses', 'Chateaux', 'Print & Broadcast Media', 'French Schools', a myriad of 'Gourmet' topics, 'French Language Schools', 'French Courses & Exercises', 'Lodging [Apartments, B&Bs, Chateaux, Hostels and Hotels]', 'Maps', 'Museums', 'Real Estate', 'Restaurants', 'Travel to France', 'Tourist Information', 'Transportation Sources' and 'Zoos'.
The Audience
By joining with French-at-a-touch, you have the potential of reaching a world of English speaking people who are interested in the French language and the French speaking countries. You will also reach a vast audience of bilingual readers. A high percentage of French speaking Europeans [from Belgium, France, Luxembourg, Monaco and Switzerland] read and/or speak English. In North America, there are 9 million people in Québec and another 1.9 million in the United States [as of the 1990 US census] who are French Speakers and who read, write and speak both languages. Add to these almost 11 million, the tens of millions of North Americans who have studied French in high school and college [see: French, the Most Practical Foreign Language, by Richard Shryock, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University].
But, North America is not alone in the love of the French language, its culture and its civilization. French is a popular second language throughout the English speaking world. Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK, South Africa and India have huge enrollments in high school and college French classes. In Holland, Sweden and Denmark, where virtually the whole of the urban population also speaks English, there are also millions that have pursued the study of French.
The French government claims that France is the most popular tourist destination in the world. In 2000, 75.6 million tourists visited France; by contrast, the US hosted 52.7 million foreign tourists in 2000. According to the US Census, the French were the US's 5th greatest source of tourists. Foreign tourists spent 215 billion French francs [32.78 billion euros, 30 billion dollars] in France in 2000.
Foreigners visiting Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Monaco, Morocco and Tunisia were also in the tens of millions. Of these, over 90 million travelers, considerably more than one third were from countries where English is either the primary or a very strong secondary language. French hotel reservation statistics indicate that 21% of all tourist, visiting France were British while 13% were American.
French-at-a-touch has visitors from all of the above mentioned countries who are searching for travel information, gourmet products, French language courses, etc. For the most part, these are people that want to enjoy a touch of a francophone experience, be it in a French speaking country or at home. They are interested in French fashions, champagne, foie gras, and the charm of travel in a French speaking country. These Francophiles constitute a large, virtually untapped market that French-at-a-touch has access to.
